"I had to share this with you! Especially after reading your last newsletter!
APA recently asked me to do a workshop for an internal conference that Adventist Health was conducting for it's Human Resources, Payroll and Information Services staff. The organization has had issues getting the different functions to work well together, managing change, etc. My topic was 'Integrating Payroll and HR,' a topic I've presented the last two years at Congress. Although I had a good opening, using comparisons like oil and water, protons and electrons, and other things that don't normally 'mix,' it still didn't have the 'zip' that you've taught us to achieve, and it didn't flow through the presentation naturally.

So the night before I was mulling this over and BAM! There it was! I remembered how you suggested starting a presentation with the words 'When was the last time...' and I had my opening! I started with 'When was the last time you mixed oil and vinegar together?' and got an immediate audience reaction of laughs and nodding! One attendee raised her hand and I engaged her story about salad dressing as part of the opening. Then, when it was all over, I was able to refer back to the oil and vinegar by noting that yes, they are separate ingredients yet when they are integrated they make wonderful salad dressing, and that's what happens with HR and Payroll - they are separate functions with their own responsibilities yet together they can achieve great success during those times when they must work together. It all fit together perfectly and for the first time I felt that the workshop had the right opening and closing that it needed to make it's point.
