Great Keynote Speech and TED Talk: Every Child Needs a Champion

One of my speech coaching clients recommended I watch a video of a TED Talk as an example of the type of message she needs to deliver. As soon as I had watched it I thought, “We must invite her to speak at the National Speakers Association convention.” How sad to discover Rita Pierson died two months after this talk.

Rita demonstrates how you can build rapport with an audience, that you can speak to be remembered and repeated, the power in short stories, the importance of dialogue in a story, that audiences love simple stories that are well told, that you can get laughter with a serious subjects, and that a good speech does not need a PowerPoint.

Listen to Rita’s TED Talk and ask yourself, “Do I have the ability to emotionally connect with an audience this well?” The answer is most likely, “Not as well as Rita.” However, maybe I am just speaking longingly for myself.

About Rita F. Pierson

Rita F. Pierson spent her entire life in or around the classroom, having followed both her parents and grandparents into a career as an educator. As a professional educator since 1972, she taught elementary school, junior high and special education. She was a counselor, a testing coordinator and an assistant principal. In each of these roles, she brought a special energy to the role — a desire to get to know her students, show them how much they matter and support them in their growth, even if it was modest.

For the past decade, Pierson conducted professional development workshops and seminars for thousands of educators. Focusing on the students who are too often under-served, she lectured on topics like “Helping Under-Resourced Learners,”“Meeting the Educational Needs of African American Boys” and “Engage and Graduate your Secondary Students: Preventing Dropouts.”

Pierson passed away in June 2013.
